Museums in Palanga

For rainy days
Nearest 3 min away

Palanga has six museums, and five of them are no more than ten minutes’ walk from the hotel. In one you may touch the sculptures, in another the wind plays the villa’s roof, and in a third there are tens of thousands of pieces of amber.

‍

Below you will find them all on a map, with a sign showing whether each is open right now, plus ticket prices, family tickets, free Sundays and a route for a rainy day. The most important thing to know in advance: on Mondays all the main museums are closed.

Free Sunday

On the last Sunday of every month the Amber Museum and the Jonas Šliūpas Museum let everyone in for free. The next ones are 25 October, 29 November and 27 December. The rule does not apply to Palanga’s other museums.

What makes each one special

The Resort Museum is housed in Villa Anapilis, first photographed in 1898. It belonged to Countess Sofija Tiškevičienė, and locals called it „ana pilis“, “that castle”. During restoration in 2015, eight tin “drums” were found under the dome: wind organs that hummed when the sea wind blew. Four halls tell Palanga’s story from a 9th-century trading settlement to the resort’s centenary, and there is a mirror room and a corner for retro photos.

‍

The Antanas Mončys Art Museum shows sculptures, drawings, collages, whistles and masks by the modernist who lived in Paris. The artist wanted people to be able to touch his work, and that wish is still honoured here. The ground floor has changing exhibitions.

‍

The Jonas Šliūpas Museum is in a late-19th-century wooden Tiškevičiai villa with a glazed veranda, restored in 2022–2023. The permanent exhibition about Šliūpas is still being prepared, so temporary shows are on: Antanas Gudaitis’ “Summer Workshop” runs until 19 March 2027. It is Palanga’s most accessible museum, with a lift and rooms and toilets adapted for wheelchairs.

‍

The Amber Museum has been in the 1897 Tiškevičiai Palace since 1963. There is more about it and the park around it in our guide Birutė Park and the Amber Museum.

  • On Mondays all the main museums are closed. On Tuesdays the Mončys and Jonas Šliūpas museums are closed, and so is the Resort Museum in summer. On a Tuesday, choose the Amber Museum.
  • On public holidays museums are usually closed, and on the day before, the Amber and Resort museums close an hour early.
  • Last admission: the Amber Museum’s ticket office closes an hour before closing time; the Resort and Jonas Šliūpas museums let visitors in until half an hour before closing.
  • On summer evenings the Amber Museum is open until 20.00 (19.00 on Sundays), and the Resort Museum until 19.00 all year round.
  • The Mončys museum warns that its hours may change, and the Dog Museum also opens by appointment, so it is worth phoning ahead.

Worth knowing

The Mončys Art Museum and the Fairy Tale Park are only a few minutes from the hotel, so you can fit them in between breakfast and the beach. After a day of museums, warm up in the sauna.
