The lifeguard season in Palanga runs from 15 May to 15 September; all posts are staffed from 1 June. Swimming is not forbidden at other times, but there are no lifeguards on the beaches.
Is the Amber Museum open in winter?
Yes. From 16 September to 14 May the museum at Vytauto g. 17 is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00–18.00 and Sunday 10.00–17.00. It is closed on Mondays and public holidays, and the last visitors are admitted an hour before closing.
Do you need a ticket for Birutė Park?
The park itself is an open public space, free to walk around all year. A ticket is needed only to enter the Amber Museum, housed in Tiškevičiai Palace at the centre of Birutė Park.
How long is Palanga pier, and is it open in winter?
The pier stretches about 470 m out to sea from the end of J. Basanavičius Street and is open all year. It is closed for a time during strong storms or when iced over, so on such days it is worth checking the local news.
Where can I buy fresh and smoked fish?
Palanga market, at Senojo Turgaus g. 12, has a food hall with fish stalls. The market is open Tuesday to Friday 8.00–17.00 and Saturday 7.00–16.00.
Is Palanga good for cycling?
Yes, there are separate cycle paths along the coast. Palanga tourist information centre (Vytauto g. 94) lists a route of about 20 km from the Musical Fountain to Būtingė via Šventoji, and one of about 15 km from Palanga to Nemirseta.
